Strictly 2018 may be a long way off – but Shirley Ballas has dropped a pretty big hint that she might not be back on the panel next year.

The new head judge joined fellow panellists Darcey Bussell, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli this year following Len Goodman’s much-publicised departure from the show.

But speaking at a BBC Christmas party earlier this week, Shirley sparked speculation by refusing to confirm whether she would be back on the panel next series.

‘Let’s wait and get this season over with first,’ she told The Sun Online, adding: ‘It’s been an experience! And at 57! It’s been wonderful.’

Shirley also hit back at viewers who criticised her decisions in the dance-off, pointing out that the viewers are the ones who vote – or fail to vote – for their favourites in the first place.

‘They put Alexandra in the bottom two,’ she pointed out – following the favourite’s unfortunate brush with the bottom two last weekend – ‘and if I would have sent her home they would have blamed me, but they put her there!’

Shirley’s comments come as previous head judge Len Goodman admitted that he regretted hanging up Len’s Lens and leaving the show.

When asked by Lorraine Kelly if he missed the show, the 73-year-old said: ‘Yes course I am. There’s always a twang.’

However, Len added ‘I done it for 12 years, I wasn’t getting too dithery, I wasn’t dribbling, there comes a time when you think I did it for 12 years. And I couldn’t do the flying backwards and forwards.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday night on BBC One at 7.05pm.
