Former Chelsea stars Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack are set to return to the club in ambassador roles, according to reports.

Lampard left the club in 2014 after 13 highly successful seasons at the club, in which he became their record goalscorer, while Ballack won the double during his four-year spell.

And now the Daily Mail report that the duo have met with club director Marina Granovskaia about a return Stamford Bridge, though neither player has been able to commit immediately.

Although very happy with the offer to be ambassadors for the club, both Ballack and Lampard are preoccupied with media duties at present.

Nevertheless, there is confidence at the club that both former players – who are regular guests of Roman Abramovich – will be able to be installed in their new roles in the near future.

Chelsea insist this will have no impact on the current running of the club, and neither player will be forced into Antonio Conte’s coaching team.

Abramovich has been known to influence his manager’s backroom staff in the past – notably installing Michael Emenalo as Carlo Ancelotti’s No.2 at the expense of club legend Ray Wilkins.

However, the club have no intention of rocking the boat by bringing Lampard and Ballack into the fold, nor will either player replace Emenalo as technical director.

Granovskaia, who has absorbed those duties into her own role, is keen to keep Chelsea connected to the stars of their past.

It remains to be seen how Lampard will get on with current Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas if he does return to the Bridge, though, given that he recently admitted the club sold him over fears they could not share a dressing room.
