Star Wars The Last Jedi may have impressed critics, but its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is shockingly low

Sometimes there are movies that everyone, including critics and audiences, loves unanimously. Sometimes either critics hate it and the audiences like it, sometimes it is the other way round. With the latest Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, it’s the latter case. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Last Jedi is getting all the love critics have with 93% score at Tomatometer. The consensus says, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi honors the saga’s rich legacy while adding some surprising twists — and delivering all the emotion-rich action fans could hope for.”

All very good, right? Well, not really. Almost half of the audiences, though, seem to hate it. Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s audiences score is only 57%. I will go out on a limb and say that the fans rating the film poorly are those who are diehard fans of the franchise. I am not saying everybody who is loving it is not a Star Wars fans. But there are fans, and then there are fanatics. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a great movie with several moving scenes, twists and great spectacle, it is a lot different from the previous Star Wars movies.

I saw a similar phenomenon with Justice League. The situation was reversed, though, but the division was about the same. Justice League was dissed by most critics, while a large majority of the fans (at least those on Rotten Tomatoes) seemed to swear by it. After 2-3 days of its release, when Justice League’s critic score stood around 40%, 85% of audiences seemed to like it.
