Channel 4 have dedicated their Christmas special of Gogglebox to Leon Bernicoff, who has died at the age of 83 after a short illness.
The TV star was a favourite among Gogglebox viewers for his warmth, sense of humour and his relationship with his wife June.
When the news of Leon’s passing broke, Channel 4 announced they would air a tribute to Leon ahead of the episode.
The continuity announcer introduced the special, which aired on Christmas Eve, and revealed the show was dedicated to him.
They said: ‘Before Gogglebox begins we’re sorry to have to tell you the very sad news that Leon passed away in hospital yesterday. He will be sorely missed and we dedicate tonight’s show to his memory.’
The announcement was followed by a clip of Leon trying to wrap a tin of Quality Street for a Christmas pressie.
June can be heard calling from another room: ‘Have you packed them yet?’
Leon replied: ‘I’m trying. I can’t undo the Sellotape.’
As Leon sneakily tucks into one of the sweets, June says: ‘It’s all done ready for you. You’re not eating any sweets are you, Leon? Because they’re supposed to be for a present.’ Leon then quickly stuffs the choc into his mouth.
Leon, a former teacher, and June appeared on the Channel 4 show since its first series in 2013.
The episode saw families including Leon and June, the Tappers, the Siddiquis and Giles and Mary reacting to shows including Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Foster, Naked Attraction and The Crystal Maze.
Leon’s wife June took to Twitter on Saturday night to thank fans for their support.
The 78-year-old tweeted: ‘Thankyou Folks for all your wonderful messages. ‘Leon would have loved reading them & hearing how much he was loved. Goodnight & God Bless!’
