A house fire has killed hundreds of tarantulas.
Their owner Liu was at work when the blaze tore through his home in in Suzhou City’s Wujiang District, in East China’s Jiangsu Province.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by a short-circuiting electric blanket that was covering the spiders’ enclosure.
Liu had apparently not turned off the blanket for days, which led to the fault.

‘The spiders are from tropical regions,’ an upset Liu said as he tried to justify using the electric blanket.
‘They’re not used to the local cold climate.’
Firefighters had discovered the tarantulas’ carcasses strewn all over the floor when they entered the home after being called by the landlady.
They had roasted in their plastic containers.

The landlady had not known Liu was keeping 400 spiders as pets.
Only 100 of the insects survived.
He had bought the pets, which included Mexican rustleg tarantulas (Brachypelma boehmei), for 70,000 RMB (£7,985) over six years.
There were no human casualties in the fire.
