Thousands of people travelling to the Alps have been left stranded and one person was killed after France was hit with heavy snow at the weekend.

Roads were impassable which led to 3,500 motorists being forced to spend the night in emergency shelters.

And 500 holiday-makers, including pop star Pixie Lott, who landed at Chambery airport, were also affected.

The weather was so cold the Red Cross had to treat people for hypothermia in the shelters.

A 22-year-old man died when an avalanche swept him away as he skied off-piste in Val d’Isere on Saturday.

The French National Weather Service said in Savoie the avalanche warning level was at four on a scale of five.

Holidaymakers complained travel companies had no contingency plans for the bad weather.

Chris Coates-Dale wrote: ‘We won’t be booking a skiing holiday through Crystal Ski again.

‘Delayed flights and coach journey will see our young family go without food and drink for 16 hours as we now wait for the supermarkets to open on New Years Day. Tap water only for us at @Beitostolen_ski.’

Pixie Lott wrote on Twitter: ‘Heyyy can anybody help pick up 7 people from Chambery Airport?! Can’t find any taxi so cold!’

This year has been one of the best on record for snow in the Alps which has seen more skiers than normal head to the resorts.

On December 24 150 skiers were rescued after becoming stranded in chair lifts at a resort in the French Alps.

The skiers at the Chamrousse ski resort, near Grenoble, were trapped for several hours.
