Rose McGowan Gets Her Own TV Series as Hollywood’s Reckoning Continues

It appears that Hollywood’s ongoing sexual misconduct reckoning has taken an important turn: in addition to weeding out some of its bad actors (and producers and broadcasters and so forth), the entertainment industry has also begun to elevate more women. On the news side of things,Matt Lauer has officially been replaced by Hoda Kotb, as announced Tuesday on the Today show—and now, one of the most central figures of the #MeToo movement, Rose McGowan, will star in and produce her own TV series as well.
Citizen Rose will be a five-part docuseries on E!, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and will debut in January with a two-hour documentary. The series will document the actress and activist’s life and, as McGowan herself put it, formally invite viewers “into my mind and world” as she also prepares for the release of her new memoir, Brave.
McGowan has been a central figure in the #MeToo movement since word first broke about Harvey Weinstein—largely because, as she seemed to confirm on Twitter, she’s been talking about her alleged rape by a studio head since 2016. (Until last year, she had not used his name when discussing her story; Weinstein has denied all nonconsensual acts.) Since then, she’s used her platform to call out various hypocrisies in the industry, as well as actors whom she views as hypocritical—like Ben Affleck and Meryl Streep. As the press release for the series notes, McGowan has been very busy lately: “In the span of ten days, artist/activist Rose McGowan was arrested, met with former President Barack Obama, and became one of TIME Magazine’s ‘People of the Year,’ all while navigating the minefield of those trying to silence her.”
“I am thrilled to partner with E! to amplify my message of bravery, art, joy and survival,” McGowan said in a statement. “As I ready my book, Brave, I realized I wanted to show how we can heal through art even when being hounded by evil. I want to have a conversation with everyone, and most especially, you, about looking at things differently and seeing beauty everywhere. E!’s tremendous reach and impressive platform allow me to globally communicate the importance of living a brave life.”
Citizen Rose will premiere on January 30 at 8 P.M., with the remaining four episodes set to air in spring 2018.
