Sir David Attenborough has urged us all to ‘protect our beautiful world’.
The legendary TV presenter hosts Blue Planet, which at the 2018 National Television Awards was awarded the Impact Award, and he thanked the cameramen and women for ‘diving into oceans’ and spending three or four years creating a show that’raises an issue that is of great importance not only to this country but worldwide’.
‘It was my job, my privilege, to provide the words for that series and you know and I know that what counted was the pictures, and it is the pictures that were created by cameraman and women who dived in to the oceans, who spent three, four years doing so,’ he said on stage as the audience gave him a standing ovation.
‘These are the people who should be holding this but I know that they would join me in saying that we all are trying to do is raise an issue that is of great importance not only to this country but worldwide.
‘If our TV programmes have helped stir the conscious’ of people around the world and that we are going to do something to protect our beautiful world then all of us would be very pleased.’
Later, Sir David admitted that they never set out to make Blue Planet an issues show bu that it was ‘an honour to be mentioned in the houses of Parliament for raising an issue’.
He added: ‘We would far rather make a programme about the splendors of the sea but this is what we ended up doing.’
