Remember this day, people, as the day Saoirse Ronan herself taught us how to say Saoirse Ronan.

The 23-year-old appeared on the This Morning sofa on Friday 23 February to discuss her new film Lady Bird – and with fellow Irishman Eamonn Holmes sitting in with wife Ruth Langsford for regular presenters Holly and Phil, the subject of how to pronounced her name properly came up.

‘Were you put under any pressure to call yourself Sheila or Mary?’ He asked the actress, referring to other actors and actresses that had changed their name for fame.

And Saoirse was loving his suggestion: ‘That would sell, Sheila Ronan!’

But she revealed that she no longer worries about how people say her name, despite it being a sore spot as a youngster.

‘It’s funny, at the start when I was a kid it annoyed me more and I was very defensive over my name, and as I’ve gotten older I just find it really funny,’ she said.

The actress has fond memories of the infamous moment in which Dennis Quaid referred to her as ‘shee-shah’ at the 2015 Golden Globes nominations.

‘[Dennis Quaid] called me “see-shar ronan,” And the only thing people said after that nomination was “Well done, but what was Dennis talking about?”‘

So here it is: Saoirse teaches us once and for all, how to pronounce her name.

‘So for the record, I pronounce it “seer-sher”. People over in the UK and America say, “sur-sher” or “ser-shah”, but then there’s other people in Ireland that would say “sor-sher”, which is how you [Eamonn] say it.’

So, that cleared everything up for everyone? Or is anyone even more confused?

Sheila Ronan it is then.

This Morning continues weekdays at 10.30am on ITV1.
