An unnamed NFL team is so interested in Baker Mayfield’s life that they reportedly hired somebody to tail him.

Sports Illustrated reported the following Thursday:

Later on Tuesday, Mayfield received an alert from a trusted source that he had a tail in Norman. A private investigator, he was told, was tracking his movements on behalf of a team. The MMQB was unable to verify the identity of that team, but it should come as no surprise that any NFL franchise considering a (minimum) four-year commitment and tens of millions of dollars to a 22-year-old might like to know how he spends nights near his old stomping grounds.

People are constantly talking about whether or not Mayfield is the next Johnny Manziel. I have no idea if he is or not, but you know how you don’t tamp down that speculation? By hiring private investigators to tail the guy. People are instantly going to assume there are problems if word of a tail leaks, which it clearly did.

I have no idea if Baker Mayfield is the next Johnny Manziel or if he’ll be a good NFL quarterback. I don’t have a clue, and neither does anybody else. What I do know for sure is that it’s going to be so much fun watching the Oklahoma Heisman winner spend time in the NFL. There’s going to be an electric media cycle no matter what happens.
