Poldark is about to get itself its newest villain, in the shape of Monk Adderley.

The unscrupulous MP and socialite is set to give George Warleggan a run for his money in terms of making life difficult for our hero, making his debut on screens in this weeks episode of the Sunday night favourite.

But just who is Max Bennett, the actor who plays him? And where might you have seen him before?

Heres what you need to know?

Max is 33 years old and comes from Leytonstone in East London.

He trained at the National Youth Theatre, and went on to study at Cambridge, where he performed with the Footlights and the Marlowe Society.

Max later went on to train at the Parisian drama school Ecole Jacques Lecoq, and landed his first film role while was living there, starring alongside The Artists Jean DuJardin in French movie 99 Francs.

Hes worked extensively in theatre since then, having performed in the West End, at the Donmar Warehouse, the Royal Court, Shakespeares Globe and the National Theatre during his career.

What else might you have seen him in?

Show bosses wanted to make sure that arguing over food and writing a shopping list didnt become part of the show a la Big Brother, so the islanders have their meals cooked for them. They do make their own breakfasts, and food such as bread, cereal and eggs (who can forget when Jamie made Camilla a birthday breakfast?) are stored in the kitchen for them to use when they like.

While Max has worked largely in theatre, he has also notched up some film and TV appearances, including in The Duchess with Keira Knightley, in the 2012 adaptation of Anna Karenina and the big screen reboot of 70s favourite The Sweeney.

On TV you might have seen him in Midsomer Murders, Endeavour, The Hollow Crown, Saving Hope and the short-lived series Will, a fictional adaptation of the life of Shakespeare in his 20s. The show lasted just one series in 2017 before it was cancelled by makers TNT.

What can we expect from his character in Poldark?

Even Aidan Turner has described Monk as a creep, but what does Max have to say about him?

Monks bored with his life so he likes to work out what peoples buttons are and push them, and Ross is one of those people, the actor told Whats On TV.

Monks not from money, hes worked his way up to where he is, and hes a successful military man. In fact, hes of a similar background to Ross. Hes the dark reflection of Ross and they both recognise that in each other and theres an innate animosity between them. George is always going to be the main rival but Monk certainly rubs Ross up the wrong way. And, yes, there might be a duel!

When is Poldark on?

The series continues on BBC One on Sunday night at 9pm.
