Legendary England footballer and pundit, Gary Lineker, has backed calls for a peoples vote on whatever deal the Brexit negotiations throw up, with an option to remain in the EU, overturning both Article 50 and the results of the 2016 referendum.

“I spent most of the last few weeks totally focused on a fantastic World Cup.

But it was impossible to avoid what was happening in the Brexit debate back home.

Now Im back I find the whole thing more bewildering and worrying than ever.
Whether you voted Leave or Remain, did anyone really vote for the mess we seem to be in, let alone the prospect of no deal with all the terrible consequences attached to that?

The politicians seem unable to resolve the problem the people gave them in voting to Leave.

That is why I think there should be a Peoples Vote on the final deal, and why I am sending best wishes and good luck to the campaigners who will be stepping up the pressure over the summer.”

With negotiations having achieved little to nothing and an eleventh-hour change of personnel, this seems like a great idea to many people, but evidence of a Remain conspiracy to others.

These 11 tweets show the state of the debate.
1.

Top man @GaryLineker. Im biased he did play for @SpursOfficial but thank god some people are prepared to stick their neck out and not pander to the “will of the people” bollocks. https://t.co/IaNfLdSBVy

3.

Hi @GaryLineker rather than calling it a second referendum, could you call it an informed referendum?

4.

I have no idea why Gary Lineker supporting a 2nd referendum is newsworthy. What next? Timmy Mallett supports proportional representation? Limahl backs the Norway option? This tweet gives away my age ??

Never thought I'd admire Gary Lineker more than after his hat trick v Poland at Mexico 86 but he's surpassed himself.#PeoplesVote

Clicked on Gary Lineker trending and the 1st tweet was an angry dad saying Gary should keep out of politics and UK would show the EU 'how its done', he'd attached a photo of a Dambuster. Looked at his other tweets, 1000s of photos of 80's popster Sabrina. We're completely fucked.

But a lot of the pro-Brexit lobby made the same joke.

7.

WTF does it matter what Gary Lineker thinks. I didn't like the result of the World Cup, so let's replay it!. #GMB

Gary Lineker backs a 2nd referendum vote. While we're at it let's have another world Cup because we didn't get the result we wanted.

If you pay any attention at all to Twitter, youll know that Gary Lineker has had a long-running love-hate relationship with TV presenter, Piers Morgan – we love to watch them argue and they hate each other. So, it was inevitable that Morgan would weigh in on the news. He did it in a highly original way.

[Narrator: He didnt.]

Hi Jugs @GaryLineker – will you also be campaigning for a replay of England's World Cup semi-final game against Croatia?
That too went 'very wrong indeed' & I'd like to pretend it never happened so we can have another go at winning it. https://t.co/Btx2PL0Nvw

— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 25, 2018

But, as is so often the case, Gary swatted his argument out of the air with little effort.

Relax, Tubs, well get another go in 4 years. https://t.co/npJlSfVx8K
