Matt Groening might be re-entering the fantasy arena with new show Disenchantment, but hes adamant theres no similarities with genre king Game Of Thrones.

Set in the fictional medieval world of Dreamland, the series is Groenings first in 20 years and has received mixed reviews so far.

It centres on the life of rebellious alcoholic princess Bean, whos joined by two slow-witted companions: the lovably dim Elfo and wicked demon Luci.

Together they navigate the quirky township, meeting the zany locals and a plethora of fantastical beasts along the way.

If youre thinking it sounds a bit similar to HBO epic Game Of Thrones, then dont tell Groening because he purposely didnt watch it during production.

We only have a reference to Game of Thrones in the beginning because I knew people would be wanting that, and I wanted to get it out of the way, Groening told Mashable.

Thats not to say hes a Thrones hater – the 64-year-old was as obsessed as everyone else once – but he stopped watching three years ago when production started on Disenchantment.

I didnt want to be influenced by it. Its such a huge part of our culture and what they do, they do so well, he said.

Groening still had trouble with his writers though, who all kept trying to sneak in Thrones references that he didnt pick up on.

I had to flatout say: “This has nothing to do with Game of Thrones.”

Occasionally, writers wouldnt listen and Groening had to be firmer: No! We are not doing it!

Elsewhere, the brain behind Futurama spoke of his love of taking fantasy worlds and turning them upside down.

Specifically with fantasy worlds that take themselves very seriously, he added.

[Disenchantment] gives us permission to say, “No you can be silly about this.”

Having watched The Simpsons for the past 20 years, silly is what fans have come to expect.

Disenchantment is released on Netflix on 17 August.
