The Handmaids Tale came to a chilling and thrilling finale on Sunday night, with viewers left with anxiety over the events that played out.

The second season saw the show move past Margaret Atwoods original story that season one followed, and took us further into the world of Offred, Serena, Nick and Emily.

After an ill-fated attempt at escaping the oppressive state of Gilead earlier in the season, the finale saw June once again get an opportunity to cross the border and begin a new life for herself.

But this time, in a shocking twist of events, June was joined by baby Nicole, whom Serena Joy had handed over after coming to the realisation that her baby girl would be growing up in a world that didnt respect her.

Commander Lawrence was also proven to be on the side of the resistance, taking Emily to meet June, but as the episode ended June couldnt leave Gilead without her own daughter Hannah and so chose to hand over Nicole to Emily.

Fronted by Elisabeth Moss, the second series premiere date proved to be a record draw and doubled its audience figures from the first in one fell swoop.

On the back of the success of its own original offerings, which have helped to draw 20 million subscribers to the service, Hulu followed up the news of a third series for the series.

The Handmaids Tale is based on Atwoods 1985 novel which takes place after a second American civil war which saw New England overthrow the government and become a totalitarian state called Gilead.

Ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate, the state – in a desperate attempt to repopulate – forces the few remaining fertile women into sexual servitude.
