The Black Cats are looking for a replacement for Simon Grayson

Micky Gray has touted Peter Reid as the perfect manager for Sunderland following Simon Grayson’s sacking on Tuesday night.

The Black Cats released a statement shortly after their 3-3 draw with Bolton Wanderers to confirm Grayson’s departure from the club.

Reid, who managed Sunderland between 1995 and 2002, guided the Black Cats to consecutive seventh place finishes in the Premier League – a feat the club have only managed once since.

And Gray believes the Sunderland board should seriously consider bringing Reid back to the club as they attempt to get their Championship season up and running.

“I have had conversations with him [Peter Reid] in the past and I know for a fact he would love another crack at that job,” Gray told The Sport Bar.

“The north east jobs – Sam Allardyce probably got it right – you’ve got to live in the north east and get what the punters are thinking.

“You get a bigger cheer when you win a 50/50 challenge than when you’re scoring a goal. That’s all they want.

“They want to see a bit of that bite – a bit of that passion. They hold up their hands sometimes and say: ‘ok we lost today but we saw a little bit of fight in the players.’

“I haven’t seen that for six years. For some reason we’re trying to get the ball down and play some pretty football.

“Sunderland is fast and fiery and who cares what beautiful football we play. When Peter Reid was in charge of us at Sunderland we used to have Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips up front.

“Every time we got the ball we tried to play it up to Niall Quinn. So that’s not pretty football. I honestly don’t know who’s going to come in that door and get it right.”
