A man has confessed to killing nine people and dismembering their bodies at his flat.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, claims to have met eight women and a man after contacting them on Twitter.

All of them had expressed suicidal thoughts and he is believed to have lured them to his apartment with offers of help to die.

Police in Tokyo, Japan, discovered the dismembered bodies at Shiraishi’s apartment while investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman.

The bodies had been chopped up and were being stored in separate coolers.

Police have already recovered 240 bones from the small apartment.

Shriaishi has reportedly confessed to all the killings, telling police some of the killings were motivated by rape and others by money.

He stole around 500,000 yen (around £3,300) from one victim.

Shiraishi told officers: ‘I couldn’t throw away (the bodies) out of fear for being caught.’

He said he dismembered the bodies in the bathroom using a saw which has also been recovered.

The killing spree started in August and lasted over two months.

Officers discovered the ‘house of horrors’ after the missing 23-year-old woman’s brother noticed that she had posted a message on Twitter which said she was ‘looking for someone who will die with me’, and alerted police.

The message said she ‘wants to die, but is scared of dying alone.’

Neighbours of Shiraishi told police they smelled strong odours coming from the apartment in August.

One man said: ‘I thought it smelled like sewage. It was something I never smelled before.’
