We don’t want to get over-excited about Christmas ads just yet, given that there’s still two months till the big day and all – but after seeing this teaser we’re not sure we can deal.

Because it appears that Marks and Spencer have entered the race early this year, after dropping what appears to be a massive hint about their own festive offering – and leading to speculation that a certain Paddington Bear might just be the star.

It takes the form of a ten-second teaser clip, featuring a breaking news item fronted by presenter Angela Rippon – and yes, Santa is involved.

‘Breaking news just in,’ she tells us. ‘Santa was caught on video in London late last night. Not with an elf, but with a bear.’

Cue footage featuring somebody decidedly bear-shaped, with a hat on, carrying what looks like a sackload of gifts.

WHAT CAN IT ALL MEAN?

Well it seems plenty of you already have your own theories about the ‘bear’, suggesting that the ad will indeed star Paddington (and given his new big-screen adventure is released on November 10 the timing would certainly be perfect):

And while we don’t want to bark up the wrong tree here – but looking at the all-too-brief footage of that London street where Santa’s been hanging out, it does look suspiciously similar to the road where Paddington lives with the Browns.

So perhaps you guys could be on to something after all. But regardless of whether they’re correct or not, it’s fair to say this has sparked a fair deal of excitement.

As it happens we may not have to wait too long to find out – since the clip ended by hinting at a date of 7/11/17 – which is next Wednesday, which suggests we might just get to see the full Christmas ad then.

With the John Lewis ad imminent too, it’ll be interesting to see how Marks and Spencer’s offering shapes up, given how they attempted to beat Buster the Boxer at his own game last year with their emotional offering starring Mrs Claus (played by actress Janet McTeer).

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, folks.
