If you’re going to be in a band with your brothers, then it’s quite natural to expect they might be a little over-protective of you.

But for Shereen Cutkelvin – lead singer of X Factor semi-finalists The Cutkelvins – siblings Jay and Kyle might just have taken it to new levels.

Because previously they told metro.co.uk that they’ve banned their sister from dating until she’s 41 – which, given she’s only 20 now could mean she has a while to wait – but hang on, they were kidding, right?

‘It’s completely true, the boys are quite over-protective of me like that,’ she told metro.co.uk ahead of this weekend’s semi-final.

OK, so perhaps they are all exaggerating just a tad – but then Shereen herself has admitted that she’s happily single at the moment as she added: ‘I’m not looking for love right now’ – but admits she could ‘never say no’ if the right person came along.

It’s the second shot at fame for the singer following her brush with the charts in 2015 girlband Neon Jungle – but she’s admitted that this time around it’s very different.

‘It’s definitely a lot different for me because I’m here with my brothers, and this is what I’ve always dreamed of,’ she explained.

‘It’s not every day you get to perform with your brothers, so I’m very grateful for it.’

The band reached a bit of a turning point last weekend when they took to the stage with an original song – Saved Me From Myself – for the first time this series.

And they’re doing it all over again this week as they aim to reach the final with another self-penned track, Nothing Like You.

‘Our main competition is ourselves, because you’re trying to better yourself every week and not think too much about the other contestants.

‘If you just try and hit the bar for your own songs every week, that’s just the way to go about it.’

The X Factor continues on Saturday night on ITV at 7.30pm.
