A tiger escaped from a French circus and roamed the streets of Paris before being killed, police said.

The animal was eventually tracked down by a staff member near a bridge over the River Seine, just over a mile away from the Eiffel Tower.

It was ‘neutralised’ by a circus worker, officers said.

In a statement, police said: ‘All danger is over.’

Earlier, the tiger was loose for ‘some time’, police said, but it doesn’t appear to have attacked or injured any humans.

The alarm was raised at 5.50pm when rail announcers on line T3a said: ‘A tiger is on the loose, please vacate the station.’

The tram line was then closed as the animal roamed around the vicinity.

But a witness said the tiger caused ‘intense panic’ in the streets of the French capital.

They said: ‘There were people running and screaming. It was a very big, fierce looking animal.’

Circus employees initially gave chase with a pole and a piece of meat, but then told police to ‘use live bullets’.

Some residents of the 15th district, where the animal was killed, said they were angry about its death as they posted photos of the body online.
