The Critics’ Choice Award nominations have arrived, adding a new layer to awards season (because there weren’t enough layers already!) and giving an important boost to Guillermo del Toro’sThe Shape of Water, a dazzling fairy tale about a woman who stumbles across an extraordinary creature. Lead star Sally Hawkins received a best-actress nod, while her co-stars Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins received supporting-actor nominations. It was nominated for 14 awards overall, a stunning display of the film’s potential this season.

But don’t worry about your other favorite front-runners. Call Me by Your Name, the romantic adaptation directed by Luca Guadagnino, received eight nominations, including a best-picture nod, a best-director nod, and acting nods for stars Timothée Chalamet,Armie Hammer, and Michael Stuhlbarg.Lady Bird,Get Out, and The Post also received eight nominations apiece, including recognition for best picture.

In the supporting-actress category, all eyes are on Tiffany Haddish, who received yet another nomination for her breakout role in Girls Trip. The actress has been having an extraordinary year thanks to the blockbuster comedy, recently picking up her first official award of the season for her performance as fiery, raunchy Dina. Though it’s tough to say if Haddish will take this streak all the way to the Oscars (comedy performances don’t tend to be rewarded by the Academy), the groundswell of support from the Critics’ Association could be another important boost.

In the TV realm, the nominations were all about delicious throwbacks. Feud: Bette and Joan,Ryan Murphy’s juicy series about the Bette Davis and Joan Crawford rivalry, leads the pack with six nominations. The sumptuous drama was also an Emmys front-runner this year, but ended up being shut out by HBO’s juggernaut Big Little Lies.

Amazon’s delightful new comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is another retro series that was tapped in several categories: best actress in a comedy for Rachel Brosnahan, best supporting actress for Alex Borstein, and best comedy series. The delightful show about a 50s housewife who decides to take up stand-up comedy is an utter delight, and a certified hit with critics. Now, just a few days after its first season debuted online, the series is also a hot new contender on the awards circuit. Could Golden Globe nominations be next?
