Palestinians threw rocks at border police officers and set fire to tyres in ugly protests against Donald Trump‘s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

More than 70 young men – including teenagers – were seen on Sunday taunting the officers with slingshots and stones in Bethlehem for several hours.

At least six people were hurt in the violent exchanges, in which it is alleged police fired tear gas grenades at the men.

It erupted in fierce reaction to Trump publicly calling Jerusalem Israel’s capital.

‘We know we don’t have weapons like them and that throwing stones won’t free Palestine or defeat them,’ said Samir, a Bethlehem resident who participated in the protest.

‘But we need to throw stones at them so the world knows that we are against Trump’s unjustifiable decisions.’

It is feared more Palestinians will join the protests.

‘There should have been more people protesting here today, but I know that the protests will grow tomorrow and the next day because no one can accept Trump’s assault on Jerusalem,’ said Ali who witnessed the clashes.

Many politicians revealed they expected such fierce clashes after Trump’s admission.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described Mr Trump’s move as ‘reckless’.
