A former producer for MSNBC was reportedly paid off after she accused Hardball with Chris Matthews host Chris Matthews of sexual harassment in 1999, according to a report from The Daily Caller.

Two sources told the Caller that the woman, who was then an assistant producer for Hardball, received a payment of $40,000 after she accused Matthews of making sexual comments to her in the company of other network employees. However, MSNBC disputed the sources’ claims, saying that she was given the money as a severance payment that had nothing to do with Matthews’ alleged comments, and that the full amount was “significantly less” than $40,000.

An MSNBC spokesperson confirmed that the woman had complained to the network about sexual harassment, and said that Matthews had gotten a slap on the wrist in response. Matthews has hosted Hardball since 1997, and hosted The Chris Matthews Show from 2002 to 2013. This is a tumultuous time for his corporate home, who has already cut ties with Morning Joe analyst Mark Halperin in October following multiple accusations of sexual harassment and assault from a dozen women, and recently fired Today host Matt Lauer over similar claims.

“In 1999, this matter was thoroughly reviewed and dealt with. At that time Matthews received a formal reprimand,” the MSNBC spokesperson said in an email on Saturday.
