The Casting Society of America is hosting a first-of-its-kind open casting call for performers with disabilities to showcase their talents in front of professional casting directors in cities around the country.
The open call, which is free of charge to union and non-union performers with disabilities who are actively pursuing careers in the arts, will be held January 7 in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Albuquerque and several other cities, including Richmond, VA, Eagle, ID, Bountiful, Utah and Berkeley, CA. Sign-language interpreters will be available at all locations, and times and locations can be viewed at CSA’s Facebook page in the coming days.
Disabled actors in each city will be given an opportunity to perform a prepared two-page scene of their choice in front of a panel of professional casting directors, who the CSA says “are looking to expand their knowledge of underrepresented and undiscovered talent in a professional casting environment.”
The open call is being helped with the support of RespectAbility, the nonprofit organization that advocates for and advances the cause of disabled Americans; SAG-AFTRA’s EEO & Diversity Department; NBCUniversal’s Talent Infusion Programs; Paramount Pictures; the KMR Diversity Department; Eco Cast; the Sign Language Company; Deaf West Theater, Lights! Camera! Access! 2.0; the Ruderman Family Foundation; and Christine Bruno, a disability advocate with the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts.
