His mug may have been on our screens for 20 years now, but turns out the whole shebang is all just a big understanding!
You see, Jamie Oliver never wanted to be on telly.
Arguably one of the world’s most famous chefs (now) the young gun was plucked from obscurity and thrust into worldwide cookery fame after his show The Naked Chef debuted in 1997.
It’s said the BBC noticed the chef while he made an ‘unscripted appearance’ in a documentary about the restaurant he was currently working in, offering him a show not long after.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show alongside Will Smith and Jenna Coleman this week, Jamie admits how terrible his first show was.
‘I never wanted to be on telly and the first show was terrible. Really bad,’ he said.
‘It was an interesting lesson in mistakes and failure because we had to go back and re-budget and that’s when I started having a conversation off camera, used my own music, and became a bit more documentary about it.
‘So, if it wasn’t for that massively terrible first show – which you have never and will never see – I wouldn’t have the style of show I have now.’

Now the 42-year-old is reportedly worth £240 million and has an MBE we’d hazard a guess he’s pretty happy he stuck with the whole TV thing.
And his starpower isn’t waning any time soon, as he spruiked his new cookbook on the show.
‘It’s the fastest selling book I’ve ever done, which means it’s resonating with people of all ages,’ he said.
‘Writing a book is an emotional thing for me so after 20 years it’s a bit of a relief that it’s still going well.’
In the wise words of Jamie himself, ‘lovely’.
