Doctor Who fans big and small were left slightly confused on Christmas Eve after tuning in to see Time Lord companion Pearl Mackie read Deborah Underwood’s Interstellar Cinderella on Bedtime Stories, and getting a completely different tale altogether.

Pearl, who played Bill Potts in the BBC series, was due to read Underwood’s bedtime story at 6.50pm, which is a feminist twist on the classic love story of a girl falling in love with her Prince Charming.

In this version, however, Cinderella is a mechanic who comes to the rescue of her Prince Charming when his spaceship breaks down on the way to the Royal Ball.

Only, that’s not the story that actually aired.

Viewers had got themselves all psyched up to hear the story that featured the badass mechanic herione, but CBeebies had other ideas. Instead, they accidentally prepared a completely different story, also read by Pearl, when the programme aired.

And Doctor Who fans were not best pleased…

@CBeebiesHQ @Pearlie_mack @bbcdoctorwho @underwoodwriter @meghunt Didn’t sound like interstellar Cinderella to me ?

The Beeb soon realised their error though, and tweeted out an apology:

@Pearlie_mack @bbcdoctorwho @underwoodwriter @meghunt OOPS! That wasn’t the billed Interstellar Cinderella was it!… twitter.com/i/web/status/9…

CBeebies Grown-Ups (@CBeebiesHQ) December 24, 2017

‘OOPS! That wasn’t the billed Interstellar Cinderella was it,’ the CBeebies Twitter account said. ‘Apologies there was a technical error and we’ll play Interstellar Cinderella as soon as we can.’

So not to worry Bedtime Story fans, Interstellar Cinderella will be on at some point… we’re just not sure when.

But for those who haven’t quite got their fill of Pearl just yet – she’ll be appearing alongside Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker in the Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time at 5.30pm on BBC One Christmas Day.

In the meantime, actor Eddie Redmayne is due to take on the Christmas Day tale as he reads If I Had a Dinosaur, by Gabby Dawnay, Little Women star Watson will read the Boxing Day story, giving us Lost For Words’ by author-illustrator, Natalie Russell, and Dolly Parton will be reading the New Year’s Eve story.
