This year annual Christmas Day speech by the Queen left many TV viewers wondering if perhaps she had included a sneaky nod to hit Netflix show The Crown, after she conveniently referenced a key scene from the recent second season.

‘Sixty years ago today a young woman spoke about the speed of technological change,’ the Queen told viewers as she began her address, ‘she presented the first television broadcast of its kind, she described the moment as a landmark.’

That moment 60 years ago though, was recently referenced in episode five of the second season of The Crown, which charts the Queen’s ascendancy to the monarch and the challenges she has faced in the 65 years since she was handed the crown.

It was Lord Altrincham’s recommendation that the Queen televise her address on Christmas Day, in the hopes that it would help to modernise the Royal Family and keep them in pace with the rest of Britain.

The Queen also used her speech to pay tribute to the victims of the numerous disasters which marred 2017, from the Grenfell Tower fire to the Manchester bomb, as well as to look forward to 2018 and the changes in her family including the marriage of her grandson Prince Harry.

She described meeting the Manchester survivors in hospital as a ‘privilege’, revealing that ‘the patients I met were an example to us all, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience’.

Among the sad memories there was a note of hope, as she talked about welcoming new family members next year. This is thought to be a reference to Meghan Markle, who will marry Prince Harry in the spring, as well as William and Kate’s third child, due in April.

A framed photo of Meghan and Harry was displayed with other family pictures as the monarch spoke, and the couple also featured in video footage aired at the end of the festive broadcast.
