Grieving Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas has posted a heartbreaking message about facing the New Year alone, following his late wife Gemma’s death.

She died suddenly on 24 November, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia – an aggressive cancer of the myeloid blood cells.

Gemma, who was just 40 when she died, leaves behind Simon and their eight-year-old son Ethan.

The former Blue Peter presenter took to Instagram on New Year’s Eve to write that he ‘couldn’t face’ 2018, alongside an image of Gemma smiling.

He wrote: ‘Don’t want 2017 to end, even though it ended up being the worst year of my life and can’t face 2018. Think I’m just going to go to bed.’

Simon took to Twitter on Saturday night to write that the thought of a New Year without his late wife – who died less than a week after visiting her GP complaining of feeling unwell – filled him with ‘stomach churning dread’.

He wrote alongside the message: ‘As 2017 draws to its end this is where I’m at. Tomorrow will be another tough day, but I wish you a blessed 2018.’

The message started: ‘Never been the biggest fan of January. In a heartbeat we go from the light filled time of Christmas to the often barren feeling landscape of the new year. But this year it fills me with a stomach churning dread.’

He continued that he feared the start of the first school term without Ethan’s mother, writing: ‘And then there’s the looming start of a new school term.

‘The school gates, where the daily rhythm of family life is now so hard to be around, and the goodbye to the boy I won’t see for the next few hours.

‘I don’t even feel like a family now, it’s me and the boy – the team, the partnership in this challenging journey we now find ourselves on.’

On November 24, Gemma died suddenly from her illness surrounded by her close family and friends. Simon broke the terrible news to his followers on Twitter.

He wrote: ‘Today I am crushed with indescribable pain. Just three days after falling ill with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends. If you are a prayer – pray for my boy Ethan. 8yrs, precious and in bits. Thank you.’
