Great British Bake Off fans were bamboozled by the appearance of East 17’s Tony Mortimer.
The closing episode of the Christmas special aired on New Year’s day, and featured an appearance from the singer from the 90s band.
He popped up to play their famous track, Stay Another Day, for a nice little sing along with the panel and contestants.
For some fans it suddenly made sense why the judges and presenters had previously imitated East 17 in a skit, while others they weren’t quite sure who Tony Mortimer, 47, was. And now we feel old.
East 17s Christmas hit was released in 1994, so younger viewers could be forgiven for not recognising the singer, and for the rest, it has been 23 years to be fair.
No way!
Is that Tony Mortimer?
Bloody Hell.— Sarah Myers (@TaysunBerry) January 1, 2018
The judges had previously spoofed the classic 90s video during the Christmas special, and it really was a sight to behold. Fans had previously been baffled as to why they did, but Tony’s appearance made the penny drop.
‘I could easily watch Paul, Prue, Noel and Sandi re-enact East 17 for an hour’ one fan wrote. Another added: ‘It’s too much, I love it.’
But not all viewers were pleased with the Christmas special, as it saw the return of the dreaded Baked Alaska challenge.
Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig announced that the Bake Off alumni would be required to complete a Baked Alaska Tart and fans were not ready.
