An emergency call made by a drunk driver who wanted police to pull him over has been released by a Florida sheriff's office.

Michael Lester can be heard badly slurring his words during the New Year's Eve 911 call as he tells the operator: "I'm too drunk – I don't know where I'm at".

"I was just drunk driving," he adds.

The emergency operator desperately urges him to pull over as she tries to work out where he is to avoid a potential tragedy.

"I think I'm going to get something to eat – I think they (police) can catch up with me," says the drunk driver – who then refuses to give his last name and reveals he is on the wrong side of the road.

Polk County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook that they managed to track Lester down before anyone was hurt.

"Michael first told the deputy he had only two beers," the post said. "Then he changed it to three or four.

"He also mentioned that he had only slept four hours in the past four days (and) that he had swallowed meth earlier, instead of smoking it."

Lester had a criminal history that included another drink-driving incident, aggravated battery, drug possession, disorderly conduct and hit-and-run, police added.
