Shane Lynch has opened up about the death of Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately in the Big Brother House.

During a chat with Ginuwine, who had no idea who Boyzone was, Shane made an emotional admission about his friend who sadly died in 2009.

In explaining he’d been a backing dancer in the band, he said that his late friend had always taken the lead.

‘I never took leads [vocals], I enjoy making music, but in that band I knew my lane, I was the wing man not the sing man.’

Coming onto the topic of Stephen he told Ginuwine: ‘One of our bandmates, he died. It was ’09 he died. And he was one of the leads too.’

‘[He was a] massive massive personality,’ Jonny Mitchell chimed in.

In the touching moment, Shane went on to explain: ‘He was 33 when he died. It was to do with a condition he had that was never brought to his attention. So when that happened, we were in the middle of making a new album.

‘And at that point we were like ‘what do we do? Do we continue to make the album? is that it?’ but every time we got together as a group it was very apparent he was alive, when we came together. So we’ll always be five. So we decided to finish the album.’

The singer continued sweeping the floor as he talked, part of the task set by Big Brother that the men had to complete the tasks set them by the women.

‘We’ve continued on,’ he added. ‘We haven’t replaced him, but I pick up more loads. We’ve changed the sound of the band too. The two leads were Stephen and Ronan and their voices were quite distinct.’

Fans were touched by the moment, branding it ‘heart-melting’.
