Hyeon Chung backed up his remarkable win over Novak Djokovic to ease beyond Tennys Sandgren and reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The South Korean ace was once again in impressive form to beat the American and he will now await the winner of Roger Federer or Tomas Berdych in the last four.

Chung will now rise into the world’s top-30 and the 21-year-old should be relatively fresh heading into his semi-final match-up, having got the job done 6-4 7-6 6-3 in little over two-and-a-half hours.

Having never been beyond the third round of a major, Chung has upset the odds to move into the final four, and few will begrudge him a potential shot at the defending champion, should he take out Berdych.

Debutant Sandgren had been embroiled in controversy, after social media activity came to light that appeared to show his support for the alt-right movement – something he denied – but his run to the quarter-finals was remarkable in itself and he will jump to around the top-50.

In the first of the women’s quarter-finals on Wednesday, Angelique Kerber thumped Madison Keys 6-1 6-2.

The German required just 51 minutes to beat the American and will await world No. 1 Simona Halep or Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals.

‘Madison is a hard hitter, and she served good,’ the 2016 champion said. ‘So I was trying to playing from the first point aggressive and moving good and also bringing a lot of balls back.

‘I think this is always my game the last few weeks that I tried to improve, and this was also the plan today, I mean, going out there, trying to, yeah, taking the match in my hands.

‘I’m feeling the ball really good, and I was enjoying the match. I was going out there and trying to playing my tennis again. Yeah, it was a good feeling again.’
