Insane news story, will you accept this rose?

Rebekah “Bekah” Martinez is currently competing on The Bachelor. As it turns out, she’s also been listed as a missing person for months. Seriously. Humboldt County, California’s North Coast Journal learned this after it posted a recent cover story about missing persons from the area on Facebook. “After some googling returned some Instagram images that appeared very similar to Martinez’s photo on the missing-persons page, we reached out to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office,” writer Linda Stansberry reports. “That prompted an e-mail from Public Information Officer Samantha Karges to the deputy who initially took Martinez’s missing-persons report, noting the similarity in images and asking if Martinez was still listed as missing.”

Ten minutes later, the deputy e-mailed Karges back: “I just got off the phone with Rebekah. She is in fact the same person. She has been removed from (the Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit).”

Responding to some follow-up questions, Karges told the Journal via e-mail that Martinez was reported missing at 1:06 A.M. on Nov. 18 by her mother. “Martinez had reportedly come to Humboldt County to work on a marijuana farm. Her mother hadn’t heard from her since Nov. 12, 2017,” Karges wrote.

Like all Bachelor contestants, Martinez’s phone was likely confiscated for some time while she was filming the show—which would explain her post on September 17 telling her followers she was temporarily ‘giving up’ her phone and social media. On November 22, four days after she was reported missing, Martinez started posting again—but apparently, no one bothered to tell the police that.

Martinez has responded to the story, writing on Twitter, “MOM. how many times do I have to tell you I don’t get cell service on The Bachelor??” V.F. has reached out for further comment.
