Sometimes filming Saturday Night Takeaway can be a perilous business – as Ant and Dec have revealed.

Because the pair almost came a cropper while shooting scenes for the new series of the show – which begins on ITV on Saturday night – after a ‘big and dangerous’ stunt which saw them crashing a pair of monster trucks.

The scenes – to be aired on Saturday night – see them causing ‘chaos’ as they race the vehicles, both of which they end up smashing into a wall.

Speaking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes ahead of the launch, they said: ‘We’ve got a monster truck race tomorrow. That is big and dangerous. It’s huge.’

Sorry to wake you, but we just had to tell you that we're back on telly TONIGHT! ?

‘They’re massive,’ Ant went on. ‘We had a go this morning as we have to practice and we both crashed into the wall. It’s gone pretty badly so far.’

However he added that due to the cost of the trucks – ‘a couple of hundred grand’, apparently – there would be ‘no more crashing’ this series.

There will however be plenty of other highlights to look forward to this series – including the pair starring alongside Joanna Lumley in The Honoured, a sequel to their whodunit The Missing Crown Jewels.

Dec’s hinted that it could even herald a return to acting for the pair, who originally found fame on BBC kids’ show Byker Grove.

‘Last year we took the best of Who Shot Simon Cowell? and The Missing Crown Jewels and created a one-off programme which was on ITV over Christmas,’ he told The Sun.

‘And that went down really well, so we’ll do the same with this one and then we might look at spreading it out and doing a few brand-new specials.’

Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway returns to ITV on Saturday night at 7pm.
