A South Carolina school district announced its intent to punish any students who participated in a nationwide walkout against gun violence in schools.

Greenville County School District students will receive citations if they choose to skip class for the walkout, according to school district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton.

The district calculates about 530 students walked out of class Wednesday to protest school shootings and call on lawmakers to pass gun control measures. J.L. Mann Academy saw about 200 students leave while 180 students at Maudlin High School walked out of their classes.

The school district noted it warned students ahead of time about participating in the walkouts, letting them know there would be punishment should they choose to do so.

The nationwide walkouts were part of an attempt to call on politicians to pass gun legislation to prevent future shootings like the Parkland shootings from happening again.

“We view this work as part of an ongoing and decades-long movement for gun violence prevention, in honor of all victims of gun violence — from James Brady to Trayvon Martin to the 17 people killed in Parkland,” the Women’s March Youth Empower website wrote on its site.
