UPDATE with video HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher had a true Hollywood ending tonight: The host proposed a sort of affirmative action for conservatives in entertainment to protect America from bitter industry wash-outs like Andrew Breitbart, Steve Bannon and Dana Loesch.

Breitbart “called celebrities ‘elitist pestilence with their cocktail parties on the West Side,’ ” Maher said. “‘God, I f*cking hate them,’ he said. Which is funny because for years you know who I’d always see at cocktail parties on the West Side? Andrew Breitbart.”

“Oh, he hated Hollywood. Hated it. Hated it. Hated it. Mostly from his home in America’s heartland, Brentwood.”

Bannon, Maher said, once tried to sell a script that turned Shakespeare’s Coriolanus into a rap musical. “Bannon lost his shirt on that,” Maher said, “but luckily he was wearing three more.”

Maher’s Hollywood defense came during his end-of-show New Rules bit, when he demanded that “Republicans have to stop pretending they hate it when celebrities give political opinions.”

“It’s not our fault that your celebrities are Ted Nugent, Pat Sajak and Donald Trump.”

Then he was really off and running. James Woods? “His last credit was on a Mastercard bill.” Antonio Sabato Jr.? “An underwear model who all the other underwear models referred to as the dumb one.” Scott Baio? “The only thing he’s been in recently that made headlines was his co-star.”

He also blasted NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who, according to NCIS: New Orleans producer Paul Guyot once pitched a sitcom idea (that’s true: read about it here).

“If only they had made that sitcom,” Maher joked, “today she might be a completely normal person. Instead we’re all getting (her) clenched fist of truth because show business gave her the raised finger of f*ck off.”

“And so that is why I implore tonight of all hollywood executives, the next time a conservative comes to you with a really dumb idea for a movie or a TV show, just f*cking do it. We need affirmative action for Republicans in show business.

“They’re not good enough to make it on their own but if we give them a leg up maybe they won’t take their rejection out on the whole country.”
