Carol Burnett has been set to receive the inaugural Peabody Career Achievement as part of this years Peabody Awards. The honor will be bestowed May 19 at a gala event at Cipriani Wall Street in New York hosted by Hasan Minhaj.

The Peabody Career Achievement is for individuals whose work and commitment to broadcast media has left an indelible mark on the field.

“Carol Burnett is one of the all-time greats of television comedy. Her wit and talent set the bar for women in entertainment,” said Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of Peabody, in announcing the award. “Suffice it to say there would be no Gildaa Radner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Tina Fey without her blazing the trail. We are pleased to celebrate the many contributions of a beloved TV icon.”

A total of 60 nominees for the 77th annual Peabody Awards were revealed this week representingthe most compelling and empowering of electronic media for 2017. Among the shows in the running are HBOs Insecure, Hulus The Handmaids Tale and Netflixs One Day at a Time.

Winners will be revealed over the coming weeks: Documentary on April 17, Entertainment/Childrens & Youth on April 19, and News/Radio/Public Service programming on April 24.

The Peabody Awards are based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
