AMCs McMafia is about the Russian underworld, but co-creator James Watkins says the crime drama also mirrors current political scandals in the US and UK.

“Whats very interesting is the show has been very close to home in the UK and theyre talking about a new mafia law in terms of seizing illicit assets in the UK, in terms of going after some of those criminals that are hiding and parking assets in housing,” Watkins said Sunday during Deadlines The Contenders Emmy event.

McMafia stars War and Peaces James Norton as a banker trying to escape his fathers ties to the Russian mob. David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum), Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones), Aleksey Serebryakov (The Method) and Maria Shukshina (Terrorist Ivanona) also star in the series.

McMafia is co-produced by the BBC, AMC, and Cuba Pictures, in association with Twickenham Studios.

While the series is based on a book about the fall of the Soviet Union and how Russian mafia groups franchised out around the world, Watkins notes there are similarities between the storyline and special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

“If you look at elements of collusion and all the stuff thats potentially being looked at in your country, its really close to home,” Watkins said.
