The team behind hit Euro crime-drama Gomorrah are underway on new series ZeroZeroZero, which will star Andrea Riseborough (Battle Of The Sexes) — as we broke last month — Dane DeHaan (Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets) and Gabryel Byrne (The Usual Suspects). The Cattleya epic for Sky, Canal+ and Amazon will shoot in English, Spanish, Italian, French, Wolof and Arabic for a whopping eight months in six countries.
Gomorrah director Stefano Sollima is helming the adaptation of the book by Gomorrah scribe Roberto Saviano about international cocaine trafficking and its economic and political effects. The plot will chart family dynamics, Mexican cartels, the Ndrangheta (the Calabrian mafia) and corrupt businessmen. The stellar line up of directors also includes Pablo Trapero (The Clan) and Janus Metz (True Detective). After concluding the first weeks of shooting in New Orleans, principal photography moves on to Mexico and then to Italy and Africa.
The 8-episode series will also feature actors Harold Torres (Sin Nombre), Giuseppe De Domenico (Euphoria), Francesco Colella (Made In Italy) and Tcheky Karyo (Nikita). It is developed by the same creative team behind TV series Gomorrah, Leonardo Fasoli, Stefano Bises, Saviano and Sollima, and is written by co-head writers Leonardo Fasoli and Mauricio Katz (The Bridge). Max Hurwitz (Hell On Wheels), Sollima and Maddalena Ravagli round out the team of writers.
The show will debut in 2019 on Canal+ in French-speaking Europe and Africa, on Sky in Italy, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria, and on Amazon in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and Spain. International sales are handled by Studiocanal.
Sollima said, “In the globalized world, markets, production and consumption, even different lifestyles, are all interconnected, thanks to the continuous flow of trade that bring tons of goods to billions of people. In ZeroZeroZero we want to tell the story of just one of these goods: probably the most universally distributed, widely consumed and, above all, most profitable. And we are going to do it by following a container ship and its load from its point of departure in Mexico to its final destination in Calabria, describing how the international trafficking of this special “commodity” is affecting the market, the world economy and even our lives. This special good is cocaine, and its journey is our own.”
As we broke last month, Gomorrah series 4 is also underway this month.
