Leaked audio from a meeting between NFL players and owners shows that owners are very much aware that there is a fan revolt against the league.

The meeting was called to help smooth out differences over anthem protests and social justice movements in the past two years. The NFL has slowly had fans turning against them due to the fact players have continued to not stand during the anthem.

The New York Times wrote about the leaked audio and its pretty telling:

The owners kept returning to one bottom-line issue: Large numbers of fans and sponsors had become angry about the protests. Boycotts had been threatened and jerseys burned and — most worrisome — TV ratings were declining.

Pegula complained that the league was “under assault.” He unloaded a dizzying flurry of nautical metaphors to describe their predicament. “To me, this is like a glacier moving into the ocean,” he said. “Were getting hit with a tsunami.” He expressed his wish that the league never be “a glacier crawling into the ocean.”

The Houston Texans owner Bob McNair was more direct. He urged the players to tell their colleagues to, essentially, knock off the kneeling. “You fellas need to ask your compadres, fellas, stop that other business, lets go out and do something that really produces positive results, and well help you.”

Well, thats about as straightforward as youre going to get on this issue. I dont think theres much wiggle room at all here about whether or not the owners are happy. Theyre clearly not, especially when you have an owner, Buffalos Terry Pegula, throwing out metaphors about “getting hit with a tsunami.”

Heres the reality of the situation. Your average football fan in middle America doesnt want a ton of politics infused into our sports. We want to watch the games, talk about whats going on, talk about the future, complain when it is and isnt warranted, have a few beers and repeat that every single weekend. We dont need a bunch of millionaire athletes lecturing us about oppression.

Have we all forgotten that Kaepernick has actually praised the regime of murderous dictator Fidel Castro? Why would any organization want to hire a guy who does that?

Im glad NFL owners are very much aware of the problems here. Far too often, people refuse to see the writing on the wall until its too late. It looks like the NFL is very much aware of all the problems facing it from the fanbase. Hopefully this leads to some change.
