Its not easy for Claire Danes to decide to make a movie. Having starred on Homeland for nearly seven years, and won two Emmys in the process, the 39-year-old actress has kept plenty busy, and that was before she had one child (and another on the way!) to focus on during her hiatuses. But when she received the script for A Kid Like Jake, which gave her the opportunity to star opposite Jim Parsons in a family drama about a young child whose gender identity may be in flux, she knew she couldnt turn it down. It was a compelling story with an unbeatable co-star, for one thing. And it didnt even require her to leave her home of New York.

On this weeks Little Gold Men podcast, Danes talks to Richard Lawson about how she overcame her initial judgment of her character in A Kid Like Jake, who is more hesitant to accept her childs potential gender identity than many liberal, well-meaning parents might like. She also talks about the secret sauce of Homeland that allows it to keep up with the head-spinning news cycle. What it comes down to, really and truly, is something she calls “spy camp.”

Also on this weeks episode, Katey Rich and Joanna Robinson join Lawson for a conversation about Oceans 8 (read Lawsons review here) and some excitement about two of the weeks flashiest trailers, Widows and Suspiria. Plus, Vanity Fairs TV critic Sonia Saraiya and the Hives senior media correspondent, Joe Pompeo, sit down for a special, wide-ranging conversation about the Showtime docuseries The Fourth Estate, which takes an intimate look at the inner workings of The New York Times. A longer version of Saraiya and Pompeos conversation will be airing as a bonus episode on the Little Gold Men feed, so keep an eye out.
