Coronation Street fans are wondering if the show is potentially gearing up for another dark murder storyline later this year after the soap confirmed that an unexpected ending is ahead for rapist Josh Tucker – but he wont get his comeuppance through the courts.

Outgoing producer Kate Oates made no secret of the fact that David wouldnt find his closure with a guilty verdict as she was keen to reflect the low conviction rates of the crime – otherwise Corrie would risk tying the issue up too neatly and not prompting a discussion.

Kate shared with Metro.co.uk: I am not afraid of controversy – its more important to reflect the truth. If you tie things up with a bow, theres a danger people take away from that: “its all right then, we dont need to talk about this anymore, its done.” But its not done. There are lots of things within that story that we couldnt show on screen. If I were going to show that story in court, Id have been fascinated to have played the truth of it – I hope he doesnt mind me name dropping here but I am really good friends with (Judge) Robert Rinder and I talked to him about the story and he spoke to me about how he might cross-examine someone on the stand or how someone else might.

Rob is a massive supporter of the storyline – hes a great friend and sounding board. Duncan Craig from Survivors Manchester did the same when he took us through the kinds of questions someone might be faced with on the stand. Its hard and its brutal and you question whether we are set up in the best place to get these convictions? If it were a 9pm drama and we saw David Platt on the stand talking about what had happened to him, a barrister might cross examine him with a huge level of detail to try and discredit him – it is really intimate and makes you think “I never thought about it that way and how it could be spun”.

I think its important not to artificially tie things up – I believe that Davids perpetrator wouldnt be convicted in this instance. David got rid of all of the evidence. We will have to tie the storyline off – it will find an ending which will surprise people. David will get a catharsis and some acknowledgement but he might not get that legally. In soap, a lot of the justice often comes from the community – Phil Collinson used to call it the court of Coronation Street and I completely get that.

For now, Josh has departed Coronation Street but reports have revealed that he will be brought back against his will in a new twist as David seeks to make him pay for what he has done – and stop him targeting someone else.

Is this when the court of Coronation Street will exact their own brand of justice – in vigilante fashion that could see residents take the law into their own hands and put and end to Josh?

Pictures showed David and Billy watching Josh from afar as he spends time with another man. As David worries that he has a new victim in mind, he will intervene and bring him back to Weatherfield to make him confront his actions. But how far is volatile David prepared to go?

A source told The Sun: Joshs return isnt going to be anything what fans would expect. When he left Weatherfield he planned to leave for good, but in Corrie things dont always go to plan and it wont necessarily be his choice to return.

David doesnt want Josh to get away with what hes done. He knows that Josh has attacked other men in the same way and he feels a responsibility to stop him from doing it again. The police couldnt prove anything but thats not going to stop David from trying to stop Josh himself.

Josh is clearly a marked man…
