Hes now vowed to learn to do Monas make-up as she struggles with her eyesight, having only fifty per cent in one eye, so she can continue to look her best.
Appearing on This Morning opposite Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, Des became emotional when explaining the reason why he decided to continue her make-up.
Speaking on the show, Des said: Well for me its just natural. I feel that any husband and wife of our age… we love each other.

Explaining how it came about, Des said: It goes back to last October. Anytime she would turn to me and go, “oh is that okay” and I would say oh youve got it here and youve got it there. Her eyesight was very poor.
On the occasion of my birthday last October she decided she was going to get her face done-up professionally, so we went into Debenhams and Rosie ODriscoll the make-up artist was there so she said shed take it on.
I came back, she wasnt finished. And I said, “Oh you went a little crooked there.” So of course she handed me the brush and said you do it. As I did it one of the people photographed us.
