The Cannings are set to be rocked this week as Xanthe is hit by a car and left for dead.

And while they are all led to believe Elly was the one behind the wheel, the truth is it was the terrible Finn, who threatens Xanthes wife in the name of revenge.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, actress Colette Mann, AKA Xanthes nan Sheila, reveals that the storyline will be absolutely heartbreaking for fans, and was hard for her to film as Xanthes onscreen grandmother, as it brought back memories of a similar event in her own life.

The accident comes out of the blue and it comes out at a time, when unfortunately, Sheila and Xanthe have just had a pretty large falling out. Xanthe flounces out and then she has this accident and ends up in the hospital in a coma, Colette explained. Its an awful thing because it makes Sheila feel as though that could be the last words she ever said to her granddaughter was you do what you wanna do and dont listen to me or whatever she said.

Colette revealed that the scene was hard to film and very personal, as it reminded her of losing her own dad after having had an argument.

My father died suddenly when I was 14 and I had a small argument with him before he died and that sat with me for a long long long time, she said. It wasnt anything like this one, but we had words about the way I spoke to my mother. My mother and I went away, for me to do a dancing competition, and he died while we were away.

She revealed that years later, after harbouring thoughts of guilt, she learned her dad had written her a letter to alleviate the pain.

He wrote a letter to my brother, whos 15 years older than me, and he talked about that in the letter and said such beautiful things about me, she said. It wasnt until many-many years later I got the letter from my brother and it changed the whole I way felt about it. So its interesting, and I used that a little bit with this.

In the show, which sees Xanthe hit by Finn driving Ellys car and left in a critical condition, Colette revealed. its touch and go as to whether Xanthe survives her terrible injuries.

Were told its touch and go, she said. Thats pretty awful because when we did the scenes and we were all day in the hospital (we had 13 scenes one day and 13 the next day… together).

Lily (Xanthe) stayed really still in the bed all the time and didnt even move in the breaks between scenes and stuff when were running lines.

She continued: But it was a very interesting time… and quite draining but quite exciting to play as well.

To begin with, the Cannings believe that Elly was behind the wheel as Finn frames her.

Its really tense, Colette said. All of those things with finding out that Xanthe was in an accident, finding out how badly injured she is, finding out that then we thought that it was Elly, who of course, had been a mentor for Xanthe was really hard to take.

Yeah, it was quite intense, the whole thing. Well worked out though, the story line. Sometimes you look at the storyline and go Really?. But this one, when all the bits finally come together, the jigsaw finally fitted together, it was really interesting.

Scenes air from Monday 9 July on Channel 5 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm.
