The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed Andrew Lincoln will be departing in season nine, saying how itll cause a bigger gulf between the show and the comics.
Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, was speculated to be leaving the show following reports earlier this year, with Norman Reedus seemingly confirming the news by posting an online tribute.
Speaking to Kevin Smith during an IMDB interview ahead of Comic-Con, comic creator and executive producer on the series Robert Kirkman addressed losing the shows leading man for the first time.
Asked if the ninth season would be Lincolns last, Kirkman said: Its looking that way.
It does make the differences between the comic and the show more pronounced. But at the end of the day, its all about Andrew Lincoln.

This is a human being. This is someone I have known for almost a decade, somebody that I love. Hes been sweating in Georgia, away from his family, for so long.
The cast and crew are set to appear in a panel on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, but its unknown whether Lincolns departure will be acknowledged.
Kirkman added: He cares about the fans. He cares about the show deeply.
He wants to do something special on the way out. We have something amazing planned. I wouldnt want to spoil anything, but anybody who has been a fan of his journey, who loves Rick Grimes, who loves the world of The Walking Dead, youre going to want to see what we do.
If that wasnt enough, a teaser trailer also released for season nine ahead of tomorrows full reveal – showing a fist-fight between Daryl and Rick.
The general theme of the trailer however seems to be about uniting communities, showing a sign pointing in different direction labelled with Oceanside, Alexandria, HQ and Sanctuary.
Interestingly, theres a new group called Toledo which many have speculated could be a reference to the Commonwealth group who have yet to make an appearance in the show.
