Laura Prepon had a very good reason why she wasnt in the first chunk of Orange Is The New Black season 6.

Lauras character Alex doesnt appear for the first four episodes of the new season or in the trailer promoting it.

The actress took six weeks out from the show for a lovely real-life reason – she had given birth to her daughter Ella on the same day shooting on the season began.

Naturally she had a break from OITNB to enjoy her gorgeous little bundle of joy.

It actually worked out really, really great, because of Litchfield exploding, basically, last season, all the girls get sent to Max, and it was left as a cliffhanger as to what was happening with my character, she explained to The Hollywood Reporter.

They showed me in a slumped ball on the floor, and you dont know if Im alive or not. Thats what they wanted. They wanted to create mystery around my character in the beginning of the season.

I told them that was great, because Ella was actually born on the day we started production on season six.

She added that it was pretty perfect as it kept Alexs fate a mystery, and she could enjoy being a mum for the first time.

Laura went on: I was able to be at home with my brand new baby as a first-time mom, having no clue what I was doing, while they were getting the storylines going, and then I came back for episode four.

The star revealed that the Netflix show is heading towards its end game and seasonseven could be the last.

It comes after the season six finale which sees Alex plan to wed Piper when she finds out – spoiler alert – that shes being released from Litchfield early.

With Laura set to get in the directors chair again next season, shes already had a peek at what lies ahead for the inmates.

Asked what she thinks Pipers early release means for the show, she said: Well, the endgame is there. As of now, season seven is our last season. So, the endgame is clear.

But the reason that it bums me out, obviously, is because I love working with Taylor. She and I love working together.
