We need a stiff drink, a lie-down and a cry. Probably in that order after watching Bodyguards series finale.

The intense BBC drama didnt disappoint as it went out all guns blazing, pretty literally, in its 75-minute finale.

Some questions were answered, others not so much, but we give this show the saving grace in saying that this show can be left alone and itll be remembered as a diamond collection of Sunday night telly.

***Warning: Spoilers for the finale of Bodyguard ahead***

David Budd is left severely out of depth and you feel like youre drowning with him (Picture: BBC)

So…lets start with THE question shall we? Yes, Julias dead. After weeks of Jed Mercurio giving us hints only to take them away, he wasnt lying when he literally announced on the front of the Radio Times that the Home Secretary was no more.

And David (Richard Madden) could be about to join her after hes accosted by the mob and strapped into a suicide vest, only being kept alive with a firm grip on a dead mans switch.

We told you this was an intense one. There were several points we forgot to breathe as dozens of lives hung in the balance.

Walking through the streets of London bloodied and hiding his new couture under a blanket, things go from bad to worse when his cries for help are met with a brick wall.

In The Shadows Aikens true involvement is finally revealed (Picture: BBC)

You see, his friends have turned on him and think hes the mole that has been leaking info to the terrorists, because theyve found out about his Army connection to Thornton Circus shooter Andy Apsted.

So try as he might, he just looks like a mad man in a bomb vest that could blow up half of London simply by lifting a finger.

Somehow, beyond this, things get even MORE intense as he tries to stay alive, find out whos to blame, convince the police hes an innocent man and not have a complete mental breakdown in the process.

With everyone turning against him, youre left screaming for someone to see the truth (Picture: BBC)

This final episode is not for the faint of heart as he walks his way through the streets of the capital, discovering who it is exactly that cant be trusted, who he needed to pay attention to, and just what the hell exactly is going on.

Thank God for Vicky who, despite splitting from her husband, having two kids to look after and having no obligation to, somehow trusts Davids version of events and aims to get the truth to the surface before its too late.

As the clock ticks down to the moment he just cant hold on to the switch any longer, the truth finally comes out.

Craddock was the suspect we were willing to ignore (Picture: BBC)

Richard Madden is at his best in these moments, where the frustration of not being listened to, desperation to not die and confusion as to how the hell he got here became the front and centre fight to it all.

Lorraine Craddock, the woman David trusted as his boss, was definitely on the lower side of the list when it came to suspects, but we should know better by now than to not expect the unexpected.

Blackmailed by Aiken, Craddock has been feeding information back to the mob in order to keep them five steps ahead. David threw a massive spanner in the works following the train bomb back in episode one.

RIP Jules – hopefully now your death has been avenged (Picture: BBC)

You know who else managed to slip under the radar? Nadia – the woman that David saved.

Our hearts fell through to our stomachs at the realisation that the truth had been there all along – that David was too nice for his own good, caused his own children to be in jeopardy by giving their information to a scared woman, only the woman was in charge of it all.

Throughout the entire series, its been the women in control with everything. Craddock, Montague, Vicky and now Nadia. Never underestimate a woman on a mission – whatever that mission may be.

Far from the recoiling flower that she had perceived herself to be to David, and the kind of person that David befriended in the search for the truth, Nadia was an engineer in more ways than one.

Perfect bait-and-switch left you angry you didnt notice the truth sooner (Picture: BBC)

She engineered the vests, the set-ups, and a whole new version of events to get to her main goal as a Jihadi. Shed never been the victim, shed been the perpetrator.

David was just too wrapped up in protocol to see it, and his instinct to protect lives stopped it from happening.

Its a devastating blow as Nadias façade falls and the cruel, calculated genius was revealed for who she really was, and as she proclaims that it was all down to her being perceived as a woman who didnt know any better to David, she may as well have been talking to every member of the audience.

More: Keeley Hawes

The happy ending that David gets is a well-earned one, and in all honestly, it will be nice if the show accepts itself for what it is and stops here, leaving something great in a solid state rather than watering it down with unnecessary follow-up episodes.
