New Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has revealed that he is not one for going on a major cast cull and axing loads of characters – and has insisted that any upcoming exits will be for a storyline reason only. And, making it clear that he is not on a mission to shake Corrie up, he also ruled out having any returns in the immediate future.

Speaking to us recently, he said: My track record is that I dont tend to subscribe to the producer cull. I know over the years in Corrie, Ive worked with many producers where on sort of, day three of their tenure theres a Photoshop picture of them as the grim reaper in the papers and a whole list of people that its speculated that theyre planning to kill. But thats never really been my style, like I said before, Im quite story led really so therell be characters that go because the story dictates that.

Theres characters that go because the actors decided they want to go and do something else. Therell be some characters that just drift away, move out of the centre of the show and then we might elect to lose them. But, theres not going to be – I dont have a hit list. Im not going to be packing loads of people onto a bus that will go over a cliff. I think our viewers are very canny and they see that for what it is so it looks a bit cynical and its a bit like pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz, if you cynically get rid of people. People know it for what it is. So, its not my style to have cull, weve got a very talented cast and Ive not got anyone on a hit list and if the story requires an exit, it will be story reasons only.

The same goes for returns – it would only be if a story demanded it. And, at the moment, Iain hasnt got any plotlines planned that would require an old face to come back. On top of that, his favourite Corrie characters are either dead or still in the show!

He admitted: This is a tricky one. One of the things I like most about Corrie is that all my favourite characters are still in it, and have been for about 40 years. And all the ones that might still give you a bit of excitement, a lot of them are dead, fictionally speaking. So, its a tricky one. Just mischievously, I would have a go on Pat Phelan for a bit. But, I appreciate that story over the time it played out and it was a brilliant ending.

But, any producer would like to get their hands on a character like that whos capable of doing anything, so that wouldve been a lot of fun. But no, all my other firm favourites are in the show really, I dont see any obvious potential returns at this point.
