Last night, Saturday Night Live addressed the one-year anniversary of the Harvey Weinstein allegations and the beginning of the #MeToo movement. In a faux New York Film Festival panel hosted by Aidy Bryant, SNL stars played Allison Janney and Marion Cotillard and host Awkwafina played Sandra Oh to discuss the movement. And Kate McKinnons recurring character Debette Goldry joined the panel to chat about this past year and the year ahead for #MeToo.
And while the others held a nuanced discussion about the recent Kavanaugh hearing and the opportunities for women in the industry, Debette proved that she is more than a little behind the times. Responding to Awkwafinas Oh discussing the lack of roles for Asian women saying “There were plenty of fabulous roles for Asian gals in the 1940s, and I played all of them.” Debette followed up on that playful commentary on Hollywoods long history of whitewashing roles, by characterizing the role of male allies in the movement as that of “a gay husband.” She followed that up with one of her infamous cigarette naps.
