What starts out as a fun night out in E20 soon becomes a nightmare for Ruby Allen in EastEnders tonight as Martin Fowlers friends take advantage of her drunken state and she is raped. Martin is keen to attend a school reunion and persuades Stacey and Ruby to go with them.

Ruby is soon having a fun night and is spending time with Martins mates. And as the drinks flow and they flirt, she ends up going home with them. She sleeps with one of the men but then passes out, only to wake and find another on top of her.

While Ruby will end up blaming herself, Stacey points out that she did not consent and nor was she in any state to – and there is no doubt that she was raped. But meanwhile, Martin will be told a different version of events by his friends, leaving him conflicted.

Louisa Lytton told Metro.co.uk: She has sex with Ross, she falls asleep and she wakes up to Matt having sex with her and Stacey is like “Youve been raped.” Rubys view at that moment is “Well no, because I didnt stop him” and she responds “But you didnt say yes, you didnt choose to have sex with him, so therefore youve been raped.”

So from then on its what was right and what wrong, what should I have done and what shouldnt I have done and self blame and self doubt, and all those things. I think the whole point of this is women and men blame themselves for these situations happening to them because of the media or what theyre told, “You shouldnt have drunk so much, you shouldnt have worn that short skirt, you shouldnt have flirted with him” but actually in that moment if you dont consent, that is rape and that is it, theres no grey area.

So its kind of covering that and I guess its so the audience can sit back and also have the debate in their heads of “Should she have done that?” Hopefully it raises a lot of questions and maybe the younger audience will see it and really think about situations that theyre going to be in, because it is dangerous for people.

She added: Obviously its sold as Rubys rape storyline but actually its quite heavily split between her and the guys. Even when the guys arent in the show, youve got Martin there as almost their spokesperson, speaking on behalf of men of today that have been in similar situations, or that dont necessarily agree with what happened being rape, or having that conflict in your own head.

It is heavily covered from a mans point of view, which makes it different from a usual rape storyline – it is about consent. Even within Ruby, Stacey, Martin – everyone has this confusion as to what is rape and what isnt, and thats what theyre trying to eventually come out the other side and say “yes it is and its not a grey area, it is black and white”.

EastEnders continues on Monday 8th October at 8pm on BBC One.
