Which superhero is capable enough to defeat Thanos in Marvel Cinematic Universe?

We had seen glimpses of him before, but it was in Avengers: Infinity War that Thanos appeared as a fully-fleshed out villain. The artists, writers and actor Josh Brolin did a sublime job in bringing to life a compelling baddie who was not a murderous, prone-to-tantrum maniac but was actually a thoughtful, almost intellectual being.

Thanos was powerful. Even without the Infinity Gauntlet, he was a hulking beast of a figure who could take down any Marvel superhero. Along the course of acquiring the Infinity Stones and subsequent snapping of fingers, he fought the top heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and overcame them pretty easily — except a few, of course.

In Avengers 4, our heroes will likely be trying to undo the massive wrong Thanos committed to them and to the universe. Here are the superheroes who can take on the Mad Titan and deliver him the coup de grâce. The list starts from the least likely among the five top superheroes to the most likely.

Doctor Strange: While the Sorcerer Supreme was no match for Ebony Maw, Thanos own wizard and the member of his Black Order of lieutenants, he could hold his own against the Mad Titan himself. For a while anyway. Strange successfully fended off Thanos with his superb command over the mystic arts that he had learned at Kamar Taj even when his opponent was carrying an Infinity Gauntlet with every Infinity Stone except for the Time Stone. Strange, if he gets revived in Avengers 4, can take on Thanos if he gets an upgrade or something.

Hulk: No matter what you do, never underestimate the Incredible Hulk. He has been having a hard time in the MCU for a while and Bruce Banner and he are not exactly on friendly terms. But he still possesses the strength to beat not just Thanos but anybody in existence. He just has to be sufficiently angry. In case you are not aware, the Hulks strength is unlimited and the angrier he gets the more powerful he becomes. He might just smash Thanos in Avengers 4.

Iron Man: The character that kicked off the MCU, Iron Man is one of the smartest superheroes in the MCU. In addition to his cutting-edge suits, he also has a brilliant mind and is a peerless tactician. He was aware of Thanos or a threat like him. Like Batman in another universe, he comes prepared to a battle. He beat the Hulk with his Hulkbuster suit. He made Thanos bleed — a considerable achievement when others were folding up before the might of the intergalactic tyrant. Given enough time, it is almost certain he can make a suit that is capable of defeating Thanos.

Captain Marvel: Now, this is just a shot in the dark, but Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president and the architect of MCU, has said on record that she is the most powerful superhero in MCU yet. This means she is at least on par with the most powerful Avengers. Played by Brie Larson, the character will get its own movie a couple of months before Avengers 4, and then we will see how strong she really is. Apart from her strength and powers, she is probably most aware of threats from outer space, having worked with Starforce and having extensive experience of interstellar travel.

Thor: Before last years Thor: Ragnarok, we would have written off the God of Thunder as just another Avengers. Strong, yes, spectacular even, but also just boring. But after the reinvention, Chris Hemsworths character went through in the hands of Taika Waititi, Thor might have become the most popular Avenger. He has a brand new weapon, a zeal for vengeance, and, as Thor himself said, he has nothing to lose. It is now worth rooting for him. Heck, it is almost necessary. He has more reason than most to destroy Thanos. Also, he was the only superhero in Infinity War who came close to actually killing Thanos. If only he had gone for the head.

Captain America: Cap is very, very strong physically, but unlike others in this list, he is still a human with a special serum in his veins that enhances his strength and agility. He is as powerful as any human can be. He did stop Thanos punch mid-way, but that was most likely because Thanos underestimated him and was surprised when he realised this human was not as weak as he looked. And yes, Cap beat Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, but Tony was fighting both him and the Winter Soldier simultaneously and instead of using explosives, he was engaging in hand-to-hand combat with Cap. If Tony really wanted to kill Cap, he would have done so. Not to mention, Iron Man sports a nanotech equipped suit now, and might have something even better in Avengers 4.
